A rocky headland at Vallières, on the Charente-Maritime coast near Royan, where the Gironde estuary opens toward the Atlantic. Scrubby cliffside vegetation gives way to sun-warmed rock and calm water, with the low, hazy opposite shore just visible on the horizon.
About the Location — Pointe de Vallières
The Pointe de Vallières is a rugged, wind-carved headland at Saint-Georges-de-Didonne, on France's Charente-Maritime coast, marking the point where the Gironde estuary widens toward the Atlantic near Royan. Shaped by centuries of erosion into jagged limestone cliffs and small hidden coves, the point once carried a working lighthouse guiding boats into the port of Saint-Georges — now decommissioned, but still standing as one of the town's landmarks. The site has long drawn painters for its striking contrast between sun-bleached rock, scrubby coastal vegetation, and the hazy, wide expanse of water reaching toward the estuary's far shore. This painting, signed and dated 1944 by Alex Vincent, captures that quiet, sunlit corner of the French Atlantic coast during the final year of the Second World War.

A sun-warmed stone chapel stands watch over golden summer grasses, a lone cypress rising beside its weathered bell tower. Rendered in soft, broken brushwork with a gentle Provençal palette of ochre, sage, and pale blue sky — the kind of quiet rural scene that feels lifted straight from the South of France.

A dramatic stretch of Atlantic coastline, rendered in thick, expressive impasto. Waves break hard against jagged, sunlit rock as two distant sailboats cut across a cool, overcast sea. The heavy brushwork and rich, tactile texture give this piece real presence — a small painting with an outsized mood.

A tranquil Breton harbor at low tide, by French painter Victor Claisse. Small fishing boats rest at anchor in the shallows below a hillside village, a whitewashed lighthouse standing sentinel above the water. Soft, atmospheric light plays across the clouds and their reflection on the calm estuary.

A harbor scene by German painter Friedrich Schiemann (1918–1991), a Düsseldorf Academy-trained artist and master student of Otto Pankok. Heavy-masted sailing barges crowd the foreground, rigging tangled against an overcast sky, with a lighthouse marking the distant shore — likely a North Sea or Elbe estuary scene near Hamburg, a subject Schiemann returned to early in his career before turning to abstraction. Signed lower right. bout the Artist — Friedrich Schiemann
Friedrich Schiemann (1918–1991) was a German painter born in Hüls, in the Recklinghausen district, who trained at the Düsseldorf Academy as a master student of Otto Pankok. In 1953 he was awarded the Corneliuspreis der Stadt Düsseldorf, and his work is referenced in Vollmer's Allgemeines Lexikon der bildenden Künstler, the standard biographical dictionary of German and Austrian artists. While Schiemann became best known later in his career for abstract composition, his early work included representational harbor and marine scenes — among them a documented painting of ships in the Port of Hamburg. This piece, with its heavy-masted sailing barges and coastal light, sits comfortably within that earlier, more observational phase of his career, before his shift toward abstraction.

A sunlit cove along the Mediterranean coast, most likely the Côte d'Azur. Umbrella pines lean out over pale, weathered rock, framing a view of deep turquoise water under a soft, hazy sky. The gilt frame with its cream inner slip is original to the piece and adds to its quiet, gallery-worthy presence.

A quiet French river town, possibly Normandy — lavoir and mill, twin-spired church beyond. This antique landscape painting captures a provincial scene along a canal — a mill-style stone house with a red tile roof and arched windows, a church spire rising in the distance, trees leaning toward the water. The palette has softened with age into warm ochres and muted greens, the kind of patina that only comes with time.

A quiet cobblestone lane climbing between tall stone houses, slate roofs and chimney pots silhouetted against a pale sky. A stone stairway with iron railing leads up toward a doorway wrapped in climbing flowers. The narrow, granite-built architecture suggests a village street in Brittany or Normandy.
