A harbor scene by German painter Friedrich Schiemann (1918–1991), a Düsseldorf Academy-trained artist and master student of Otto Pankok. Heavy-masted sailing barges crowd the foreground, rigging tangled against an overcast sky, with a lighthouse marking the distant shore — likely a North Sea or Elbe estuary scene near Hamburg, a subject Schiemann returned to early in his career before turning to abstraction. Signed lower right. bout the Artist — Friedrich Schiemann

Friedrich Schiemann (1918–1991) was a German painter born in Hüls, in the Recklinghausen district, who trained at the Düsseldorf Academy as a master student of Otto Pankok. In 1953 he was awarded the Corneliuspreis der Stadt Düsseldorf, and his work is referenced in Vollmer's Allgemeines Lexikon der bildenden Künstler, the standard biographical dictionary of German and Austrian artists. While Schiemann became best known later in his career for abstract composition, his early work included representational harbor and marine scenes — among them a documented painting of ships in the Port of Hamburg. This piece, with its heavy-masted sailing barges and coastal light, sits comfortably within that earlier, more observational phase of his career, before his shift toward abstraction.
