A tranquil North Yorkshire scene: a shallow stream crosses a ford at Dale End, in the valley of Rosedale, framed by sunlit trees and a weathered wooden fence. By Valerie Barnaby, a Cropton-based artist known for painting the North York Moors directly from the landscape.
Inscribed on verso “The Ford at Dale End, Rosedale, The Dales, Yorkshire, England.”
Valerie Barnaby is an English painter based in Cropton, a small village in the North York Moors near Pickering, Yorkshire. Her oil paintings are devoted almost entirely to the landscape around her — moorland scenes, wooded becks, and quiet dales scattered throughout the region, including Hartoft (known locally as the "gateway to the moors"), Wheeldale Moor, Dalby Forest, and Beck Hole. True to her plein-air instincts, Barnaby prefers to paint a scene firsthand rather than work from photographs, giving her work a lived-in, observational quality.
